I didnât think Iâd need to say this, but apparently I do:
Donât use the Raspberry Pi 2040 to build a DCC decoder.
Itâs not really wrong, of course, and it gives you ridiculous amounts of computing power, but to get that you need miles and miles of extra components. Like a dozen of decoupling capacitors, an external oscillator, and of course an external flash memory. You can maybe do that sort of thing in H0, but for real model trains, itâs just not ideal. Pick something like an ATTiny or STM32C0 (Iâve done both for different projects): Cheap, just one or two decoupling capacitors, no external oscillator required and no external flash memory needed either.
The versions of the RP2350 with built in memory may be a better idea, once they fix the GPIO issues anyway, but still, thereâs the oscillator and just way too many capacitors.
(Some of these concerns may be different if you want to add sound support, which requires more memory anyway. But Iâd argue that sound in model railroads is a mistake anyway. Iâve never seen an N scale locomotive that sounds good, itâs all just an annoying expensive gimmick.)
Also while weâre at it, donât use a cheap standard bridge rectifier. The steep slopes of the DCC signal mandate a really fast rectifier, typically Schottky diodes. This is particularly important when you have RailCom on your layout. You may need four individual diodes instead of one rectifier, but since you wonât need all the capacitors of the RP2040, you still win out in the end (itâs also typically smaller than the rather large SMD standard rectifiers).

Jason was the most put-together looking person in the barn- his whites crisp and pristine, practically glowing he was so clean, and his hair absolutely perfect- and the knowledge their mom wouldâve killed him the second there werenât witnesses if he ruined any of that was all that kept Alan from giving him a hug and mussing his hair. He was certain it wouldâve helped with the nerves that were making him fidget, biting back cinders, but this was a serious competition, as he couldnât take that risk. Instead all his poor baby brother got was a firm pat on the shoulder.
âYouâve got this,â he said. Taking in a breath far too deep to be human, Jason gave a curt nod and pasted on a confident smile.
âYeah, yeah,â he said, then huffed out some of the air, teeth clicked shut around the cinders. âIâm gonna go check on the idiots, okay?â
âAlright.â Alan patted his shoulder again and gave him a gentle push forward. âIâll be scoping out the competition for you.â
âTell me if you see anything interesting?â
âOf course. Now go on, git, your birds need you.â He shooed him as he said it, responding to the raspberry blown his way with one of his own. Still, Jasonâs shoulders relaxed just a fraction as he headed off to check on his turkeys. Waiting until he was out of earshot, Alan looked around for any potential audience before kneeling beside the pen theyâd just be fussing over.
âMuffin, Cherry,â he said, tapping the floor in an attempt to get their attention. Muffin turned to him, walked up to the side of the pen and started begging for treats, but Cherry couldnât have been less interested if she was trying. âIâm counting on you to bring in this win. Donât fail me.â
This same thing had been said to his brotherâs chickens, and to his prize guinea Pig. Jason had been showing animals for the last four years and placed exactly once so far, with one of the crested bantams that were actually the reason they had peafowl in the first place. The summer after the Highbreed Invasion the Tennysons had come out to the fair to lend their emotional support and Ben had been apparently unable to keep his mouth shut about the poor cresteds and how âfunnyâ they looked. Jason had taken this as a personal insult- likely not helped by Alan, Helen, Kevin, and Grandma Evaâs own responses- and after Kevin had let slip that Ben was scared of peacocks, and also just happened to find an unreasonable amount of money to give him for his birthday, and a few trades with other owners over the last two yearsâŠ
They now had ten peafowl on the farm, alongside four guinea hens, three turkeys, and about a dozen crested polish bantams, all belonging to Jason. Plus heâd asked for a puppy for Christmas, though he hadnât gotten it. Alan had not let it be missed that he had only ever wanted to show cattle, which you only needed one of. His mom had not been moved, and unfortunately three grandmaâs didnât trump her. But if he wasnât going to compete anymore, having long gotten tired of showing goats and poultry, the least he could do was try to get some wins for his siblings.
In all honesty he didnât have much hope for Muffin, the oaten peacock was only two and his train looked awful because of it, but Cherry was a perfectly fine pied peahen and he had his fingers crossed. Alan hadnât even bothered to talk with Sarahâs harlequin rabbit, he was certain he was bombproof and near as he could tell from hearing other people talk seemed like a shoe-in for the Under-13 crowd. Chris was exhibiting eggs and vegetables, so there wasnât much he could do there. Really all he had left was to talk to the turkeys, maybe bring Manny around as a subtle threat, and he would be out of valid options.
âTreats,â he said, as Muffin continued to beg, âare for ribbon holders. Remember that.â Shaking a finger at him, he straightened back up and gazed out over the other gamefowl. With any luck, they were all crap.
His brother put in a lot of work, and damnit he deserved a win.

Progress on 2 personal projects
Project # 1 - Trade Triggerer Phase 2
What was Trade Triggerer Phase 1?
In my previous posts, I've shared some snippets of the analysis, development, and deployment of my app Trade Triggerer. It started as a NodeJS project that accomplished the end-to-end data scraping, data management, conditional checking for trades, and email sendout. The deployment was done in Heroku (just like how I deployed my twitter bot previously). I scrapped all that due to the technical upkeep and the increasing difficulty to analyze data in NodeJS.
Sometime around 2017-18, I've started learning Python from online courses for fun, and eventually re-wrote all the NodeJS functionality in a significantly shorter and simpler code. Thus, Trade Trigger-PY was born and deployed circa Aug 2019. Some technologies I've used for this project are simply: Heroku, GMail API, GSheets API. I originally only was monitoring PH Stock Market, but it was easy to add US stocks and Crypto. Hence, I was receiving these emails every day.
I followed the trading instructions strictly, and I became profitable. However, I stopped for the following reasons:
I was beginning to lose money. It seems I had beginner's luck around 2020-2022 since the market was going up on average as a bounce back to the pandemic.
PH market is not as liquid as my experience in crypto trading.
The US stocks I'm monitoring are very limited, as I focused more on PH.
On April 2023, DLSU deleted alumni emails, where my stocks data are being stored.
On November 2023, Heroku stopped offering free deployments.
Today, I am highly motivated to revive Trade Triggerer for only 1 reason, I don't want money to be a problem for the lifestyle that I want. Learning from my past mistakes, Trade Triggerer Phase 2 will be implemented using the following:
Increased technical analysis - Use of statistical models to analyze historical and current stock data
Start fundamental analysis - Review of historical events that changed market behaviour + Review of balance sheets, starting with banks
Focus on strong International Stocks (US, JPN, EUR, CHN)
Deploy on a local Raspberry Pi
I am still at the beginning. I've only been able to train models using historical data and found promising results. There's a long way to go but I believe I can do the MVP on or before my Birthday :)
Project # 2 - Web scrape properties for sale
For personal use lol. Can't deploy in Heroku anymore; and I dont want to depend on other online alternatives, too. I'll start playing around with raspberry pi for this project.
